Are Basenjis Hypoallergenic?
Some surface level online research may indicate Basenjis are hypoallergenic dogs and good for people with dog allergies. Is this true? In my experience, no. I'm not an expert on allergies, but let me share my thoughts... I've had several great inquiries from people allergic to dogs. In multiple instances, I've had these people over to my home to test the allergy on my dogs. They rub their face in the dogs hair, they visit at times when the dogs are typically shedding, they ha

When's the right time to spay or neuter?
No one decision is right for everyone. There are a lot of factors to consider when you spay or neuter your dog. Are there are other dogs in the home? Is there a possibility of an accidental litter? Will the dog continue getting along with it's unaltered canine housemate(s)? These answers are different for every family. I recommend, when feasible, waiting till at least 18-24 months to spay or neuter a dog. Before 18-24 months, the dog is getting the hormones it needs to mature

Collar vs harness
I love collars! I use wide, padded, leather or cloth martingales or limited slips. A few great brands are Hamilton Hounds, FuzzyWumpets, and Sexy Beast Collars (pictured on all 3 dogs below). They are soft leather or cloth with and come in 1-2 inch wide styles, even in Basenji size. Martingale or limited slip styles are great as they prevent the dog from "backing out" of a collar while walking. It will tighten to the exact width of the neck so it can't slip off over the ears,

Open to showing? Here's what's involved. You may be surprised...
I hear all the time - "I want JUST a pet, not a show dog." Look, I totally get it. It seems like a big commitment. Let me outline what's involved, as well as the benefits you weren't expecting. I don't require my puppies be shown, but it's a fun activity for you and the dog. It's a family sport that encourages good sportsmanship, and it's fantastic socialization for your young Basenji. It's something you can always try to see if you like it, and later pass if it isn't for you

Feeding thoughts
I feed most dogs kibble, and one eats raw. I do NOT recommend high protein kibble. Dog food companies are marketing heavily for high protein diets, claiming if wolves eat meat dogs should eat kibble with the highest protein possible. NOT TRUE! Ideal protein levels for Basenjis are between 24-28%, and fat 16-20%. When feeding kibble, it's crucial to add moisture - I feed my kibble soaked in warm water or broth so it resembles a soup. The two brands we feed are Purina Pro Plan
