A Year of Nosework

This past year, we’ve spent countless hours at Let’s Talk Dogs, and it has been one of the most rewarding things we’ve done with our dogs in a long time. What started as an outlet for energy has become so much more, a sport, a confidence builder, and a meaningful way to strengthen our partnership.
Flash: Finding His Job
For Flash, nosework has been transformative. He has always had plenty of energy and enthusiasm, sometimes more than he knew what to do with. Nosework gave him a purpose. It channeled that energy into something productive and mentally stimulating, and he absolutely lights up when it’s his turn to search.
There is something incredibly special about watching a dog work independently, trusting their nose and problem-solving in real time. Flash has learned to focus, to think, and to communicate clearly when he’s found odor. As his handler, I’ve learned to slow down, observe, and trust him. That shift alone has deepened our bond in a way that’s hard to put into words. Instead of managing energy, we’re now partnering in a sport he genuinely loves. The confidence and teamwork that have come from that have carried over into everyday life.
Violet: Building Confidence from the Start
Violet began nosework at just four months old, and it has been a beautiful foundation for her. Starting that young gave her the opportunity to explore new environments in a structured, positive way. Each successful search builds on the last, and you can almost see her confidence growing week by week. The first class she barely wanted to walk into the building, and now she strains on her leash to get in there.
She approaches new spaces with curiosity instead of hesitation. She works thoughtfully and enthusiastically, already showing the focus and drive we hope to see long term. We’re excited about her future and look forward to trialing her within the next year or two. There’s no rush; the joy is in the process.
More Than a Class
What I didn’t fully anticipate when we started this journey was how much I would love it too. Nosework requires patience, trust, and quiet observation, all things that strengthen communication between dog and handler. They are doing something we can't, and it's amazing to see them use their nose in this way.
Over the last year at Let’s Talk Dogs, we’ve watched confidence grow, energy find direction, and connection deepen. Whether it’s Flash powering through a search with intensity or Violet thoughtfully working through a new challenge, it has been such a rewarding experience.
We’re grateful to have found a sport that celebrates what dogs do naturally — and to have a place that supports that growth. Here’s to another year of searching, learning, and building even stronger bonds.
